Is F.E.A.R. 3 The First Sleeper This Year?

Well F.3.A.R has quietly released in America today and normally when a game doesn’t get much attention, it usually signals that it may not be very good.

The first reviews are in and although they aren’t saying this is the best shooter ever made, it is getting solid comments and averaging 79 at Metacritic and most reviewers agree that it is an engrossing game that does bring new things to the table.

Another great addition to the series. It’s not perfect but it’s a lot of fun and there’s a lot of value and re-play value included.
While F.3.A.R may not be the most competitive FPS on the market, it offers a ton of unique mechanics you really can’t find anywhere else.

F.E.A.R. 3 has its flaws, and some of its scares come off more as loud and obnoxious than genuinely frightening. Overall, though, the game is a fantastic blend of horror and action that’s armed to the teeth with extras.

From the single-player campaign that can be played through twice with two different characters to the co-op campaign that you can play through with a friend locally or online to an incredibly thoughtful multiplayer offering, F.E.A.R. 3 has a lot going for it.
Imagine stacking F.3.A.R. up against, say, Resistance 2. Shooters both, the games are about on par with one another in terms of graphics, sound, gameplay, etc. The difference is Resistance came out in 2008. It’s 2011, and forward-thinking gamers simply don’t feel like yesterday’s best is today’s as well. I say bring on F.3.A.R. 4, but make sure we have some new ideas, better scares and an easier to type title next time around.

this game has certainly slipped under the radar of me! i bet there will be quite a few people trading in DNF to get this game..

I think its a sleeper for sure. I have it on rental list and up until a day or two ago had completely forgot all about it.

OK I am currently going through Fear 2 at the moment and I have to say that it is my gaming guilty pleasure. I reckon Fear 2′s single player campaign is better than any COD game I have played for a few reasons.
The graphics are amazing and the story has equal parts horror and action. The guns feel great but the main reason it is better than cod is the enemy AI and the number of enemies you come up against. It’s just the right amount where you feel like a badass but not like an over the top killing machine taking out an entire army. The enemys will flank if the need arises and you don’t get the feeling of repetative left trigger right trigger controller action as with cod.

So yeah, I guess i’m looking forward to Fear 3.

If anybody has read my ‘finish those games’ thread in the forum, then you’ll know that my current backlog prevents me from picking this up just yet. Which is a shame, as I love the F.E.A.R. series, and am especially anticipating this title, as John Carpenter has been on board.

I’m glad it’s getting decent reviews, though; there was a lot of wariness as the development for F.E.A.R. 3 has gone to another developer.

I never played any of the fear games , would that matter if one was to simply pick up the 3rd from the get go?

@XUN – there is quite a detailed history of the game, universe and characters, etc. I would perhaps recommend at least checking out the plot for the first two games on Wikipedia, or similar.

It will still stand as a great action game, but the added context of knowing WHO Paxton and Point Man and, and who the eerie woman is, will make the game all the more rewarding.

Shadows of the Damned is also looking like a sleeper of a hit. Looks right up Mr Lizards street.

Makes me laugh how when a hyped game gets 8/10ish score its a bad thing. But when a game no cares about gets a 8/10 all of a sudden its a great game.

    Rant over

  • TheDaddy

    That’s expectation for you!

  • Xun

makes me laugh that people still care about game rateings.

  • F3ear looks like a solid game, too bad the hush hush release. Will have to check it out.
