Nintendo Posts First Loss in Decades

As they say, all good things come to an end. Nintendo has posted its first annual loss since 1981.

The maker of Mario and Zelda games in January telegraphed that it would post steep declines in sales and a substantial loss for the year ended March 31. Thursday’s results were roughly in line with its grim forecasts, as both sales and losses came in slightly lower than expected.

The Kyoto company, which manufactures the Wii and DS game consoles, recorded a $534.6-million loss on $8 billion in revenue, compared with a $960.5-million profit on $12.6 billion in sales the year before. On Jan. 26, Nintendo warned investors that it would likely post a $804.3-million loss on $8.2 billion in sales.

Will the WiiU be able to turn the tide? I, for one, am doubtful.

Hummmmm wiiU! No i don’t think i will help at first only coz there is no really change other the the controller. Nintendo need to make a console that can compete with the big dogs other then that the wiiU will just be a poor rehash. Well that’s my view. i hope Nintendo do something as they have bin round all my life and i would miss them!

I, for one, am not surprised. The golden years of the Wii were fuelled by huge hardware sales and, once everyone who was ever going to buy a Wii had bought one, the steady drip of quality Nintendo titles didn’t make up for the pitiful third party support and the increasingly evident lack of power the console had to offer. I’ve really enjoyed my Wii, Zelda TP and Super Smash Bros. Brawl rank very high on my all time favourite games. However, the concept of the WiiU seems, frankly, a bit absurd, and I don’t have high hopes for it’s (and Nintendo’s) performance once it is released.
