OUYA to Challenge Sony and Microsoft

A new console called OUYA (pronounced OO-yah) is planned for release in March 2013. They’ve raised close to one million dollars on Kickstarter and they’re promising an open platform for mods and hacking and indie developers. Could be worth watching.

Here’s the promo video:

This looks like a great idea. I’m thinking of this as a potentially a way to not only play great indie games that have been denied to us Aussies for too long, but as also potentially a way to consolidate my retro collection of SNES and NES tittles, throw in a PS emulator all my games gathering dust are working again (RIP PSX).
I hope it is available in Australia now we will have an R18+ rating next year.
This may mean that we have access to more Indie titles on a console that is not afraid to make a stand against the ratings board. How hard is it? Why can’t they set unrated material by default to R18+ instead of denying us access.
If it is not available locally, maybe it can be imported, online retailers generally don’t allow hardware imports however. Maybe this company will be different.

    Great looking product.
Microsoft sort out the indie games for Australia

Metric I didn’t realise that the reason we don’t have indie games was due to the lack of the R rating. Kinda makes sense now.

That being said I really don’t have enough time to play the full blown games that come out let alone indie games so this console prob wouldn’t be for me, but I can see that a lot of people would appreciate it.

You know I’d invest in something like this if they can truly get it off the ground and with some not so small names popping up on Kickstarter, this might become a reality. I am more surprised that this slipped under my radar. Thanks Duke, for bringing this to my attention. With fewer commercial titles holding my interest and Independent Developers showing they can deliver quality titles, I do not feel the need to spend a bloated amount when I can get better for less and ‘actually’ support the developers.

P.S Metric you can play Indie Games if you say you are from a country that has access.

    Silly name.
    Great potential.
Pretty sure I’d gamble $100 on it being fun !

  • i dont understand what it does differently to xbox or ps3. can you not play indie games on those consoles too? and what shooters can we play on it? i use a console so i dont have to take it apart and put a new gigowatt hd card thingy me bobbit in it. so how are they going to make that easy for people? why would the average gamer want to hack the device?

to me this all just sounds stupid.

  • just so long as it does stream games through the internet… because onlive proves that sucks

  • MetricPizza

Thanks for the tip Quanrian, I may just try that.
If I was to do such an unethical thing(not saying I will)
What are the Top 5 indie games only available on xbox live?
Also can you use any point cards, or are they specific to the country?

It is a cool idea and there are possibilities for it but kinda agree with Gangu. I can play all the retro emulators and games if can possibly need on handheld/mobile now so when I do sit down on the sofa, i want to have the full fat console experience. If I want to dabble in some indie gaming there’s more than enough to be had on PC. I’ll be interested to see where it goes though and its good someone’s trying something different.

This kickstarter has had the biggest launch day of every kickstarter to date!

I’m very intrigued by this. So much so that I went ahead and backed the Kickstarter. $99. Next March I’ll have my username reserved (Burr Salem of course), a founders emblem and a brand new OUYA. I really like the idea of bringing a lot of the handheld and PC indie games to my television, which has always been my preferred medium. It’s not going to replace my 360, but I think there’s a void there that OUYA will fill.

    Right on Burr Salem.

My new favorite movie star, Ed M, says just buy a 10 dollar cord and plug your pc into your television. Play games that way. Many people can’t do that so I say, “long live fresh ideas that benefit all gamers.”

In the event you do find yourself ‘able’ to download Indie Games then it is best to just find me on LIVE under this same name you see posted here.

Just noting for everyone that the closest we got to a pure Homebrew/Independent system was the possibly the Spectrum and similar ilk in the 80′s. I would not mind seeing such a thing again to help sober up big companies abusing consumer’s intelligence.
