Hearthfire: Don’t Bother

The latest DLC for Skyrim is good in theory but wildly mediocre in practice. Yes, you can create your own house, but there’s hardly any customization to speak of. Your house will look like the one in the picture here, whether you want it to or not.

So what can you choose? You can have a table in your main room .. or not. Oh, the options! Yeah, you can choose whether to have a trophy room on the back, or a library — but when it’s all said and done, we’re left with more of the same decorating styles from the main game. (In fact, given the varied home styles in the main game suited to whichever town the house is in, the generic homes in Hearthfire feel less special.)

I haven’t adopted yet, and there’s no adventuring or quests in this new DLC, so unless you’re really keen on slapping together some prefab homes for no real purpose, I’d say give this one a miss.

Bethesda.. Y U NO make awesome DLC for your awesome games!?

Well, I really have to disagree with this one, as you can see from the thread in the forum I really do love skyrim. I didn’t buy dawn guard because of the fact that it was just more missions (or so I thought) and skyrim already has such a variation of these that I didn’t think I needed it.

On the other hand hearth fire is something that I did want, something different to normal dlcs! Sure, the general style of house is all the same but there are more customisation options when you look deeper. The three main wings are the most obvious but hearthfire’s customisation is more about minor asthetic details. In each room you can only hae so many different things. If you want a bed you’ll have less space for wardrobes and vice versa.

I also think the knowledge that you have built the entire house and gathered all the materials is brilliant too. It’s the same thing as minecraft, if you like minecraft then you will most probably like this!

Also the one thing you have missed out on is one of its greatest features, the adoption scheme is something entirely unique for an elder scrolls game and makes your normal house a home. The way your children change over time is very clever, being soft or hard on them does make a difference when you ask them to do something. For example, the girls I’m raising by giving presents and always playing games when she’s asks, as a result, when I come back from a few long days of adventuring she runs up to me and asks if I’ve got anything for her. With the boy he just runs up and says hello.

If you need any help in hearthfire then have a look at the forum(I don’t know how to link it).
In the end though it comes down to how you play skyrim as to wether or not you like this dlc. And after all it’s only 400ms points so for that I would definately say it’s worth a shot.
