Apparently a writer named Rob Florence just stepped down from Eurogamer because of this piece he wrote about video-game journalism.
It’s a good piece, and it captures why I’m vehemently opposed to putting ads on our site.
Standards are important. They are hard to live up to, sure, but that’s the point of them. The trouble with games journalism is that there are no standards. We expect to see Geoff Keighley sitting beside a table of s***. We expect to see the flurry of excitement when the GMAs get announced, instead of a chuckle and a roll of the eyes. We expect to see our games journos failing to get what journalistic integrity means.
For the record, I don’t think accepting ads automatically robs someone of bona fides; obviously many journalists do a good job walking the line between integrity and not pissing off the advertisers. But I don’t ever want to face that dilemma.

I think this guy is up his own arse… Yes standards are a good thing but if you only limit yourself to a one sided point of view from a journalistic elite then we probably wouldn’t have an online community we have today. If anything shitty journalism has encouraged communities like ours to openly discuss opinions about video games. This guy is a dick and insulting people’s intelligence if he thinks people can not tell the difference between someone’s bullshit and a well rounded article.
I agree with your sentiment gangu but lots of people read the official xbox and ps3 mags and take it all as gospel.
I reckon this applies to the entire entertainment industry, not just video games. And yes Andrew, you’re right it does insult intelligent people who should be savvy enough to spot bias or at least be aware it might exist, particularly in entertainment ‘journalism’. But not all consumers of this journalism are as intelligent as you, I, or anyone else reading this. You only have to look at the popularity of the erstwhile News of the World to see how much rubbish some people will take at face value.
I have worked at my company for 15 years. Let’s say a few brown nosers, 3 year employees, Neil and Bob are kissing up to the boss nonstop but I on the other hand I just display a very hard work ethic. Neil and Bob play golf with the boss and constantly tell him that his golf game is a 10 out of 10. They continue to smooch his ass over and over again. I play golf with the boss at the annual Christmas party because I don’t have a choice and its obvious his golfing skill is at a poor 5 out of 10 and so I let him know he ain’t no Tiger Woods as I sink another birdie. Who gets the promotion? Who gets the Christmas bonus me or Neil and Bob? I hate political corruption. I hate Neil and Bob. I hate ads but I do like me some video game talking podcasts. Some video game podcasts, best meta critic around…veteran gamers. If you guys ever start using ads can you share you chips and soda?
Also Doritos are hard to digest.
All i can say is how come we don’t have Nacho Cheese Doritos in the UK?
