Fire and Ice

Today in Skyrim I was getting hammered by some Forsworn mage using ice bolts, and then I stabbed her in the face with my sword of flaming death, and managed to capture this totally awesome action shot.

Some Thoughts on Prescribed Characters

I’ve been playing The Witcher on Steam. (I know, I just gave away my copy of The Witcher 2 and I used to rant about how stupid PC gaming is. I’m weird.) It’s a fine game, and it’s got me thinking about playing characters whose backstories are pre-ordained.

Hearthfire: Don’t Bother

The latest DLC for Skyrim is good in theory but wildly mediocre in practice. Yes, you can create your own house, but there’s hardly any customization to speak of. Your house will look like the one in the picture here, whether you want it to or not.

So what can you choose? You can have a table in your

New Skyrim DLC: Hearthfire

They read my thing and gave me exactly what I want. The sad thing is that I will certainly spend ten times more on my Skyrim house than I ever do improving my actual home.

Once Upon A Time In Skyrim

Dawnguard: Somewhat Disappointing

Everyone who listens to the VeteranGamers podcast knows that there is no bigger Skyrim fanboy than I. Likewise, everyone who listens to the show also knows that no game has captivated me quite like Skyrim has. Three playthroughs, putting me at 300 hours or so total game time.

I’d wager that no one in the US purchased the new Skyrim DLC Dawnstar before I did. As a teacher, my body is accustomed to waking up at 5:30 AM, and it doesn’t just go away in the summertime. So it was that on Tuesday I leapt out of bed and began the download. (Before it was even a featured item on the XBox Dashboard, ha!)

In two days I have finished the main storyline and acquired most of the new achievements. I can’t be totally comprehensive, for reasons that will soon be made clear. I will, however, avoid spoilers and try to keep this short.

The verdict: It’s good, but not great.

Finding a Home in Video Games

Let me say right away that this piece is not about how I feel at home in the world of video games. That’s a very different post, one which I sort of already wrote. Also note that this piece has a spoiler in the final section (“Bethesda Does It Right”) about Skyrim’s Dark Brotherhood questline.

I’m beginning to realize how much I prefer open-world games to linear experiences. So much of my life is dictated by outside forces that I treasure the option to explore or goof around or experiment in a game world. Indeed, a case might be made that linear games don’t really let us experience a game world so much as one narrow strip of activity within a world. But there’s something else too.

I’ve realized the importance of home in an open-world game.
