PS3 Cloud Gaming

Postby Tusken77 » 01 Jun 2012, 15:52

It's real and is potentially big. The backwards compatibility problem solved for PS3 and beyond with the PS4. So, the rumours have been around for awhile and have become more and more interesting as E3 draws ever closer. Would it be with OnLive? Would it be with Gaikai? Sony doing it themselves? Well, it turns out that the deal is indeed with Gaikai. Sony aren't just offering first-party PS1 and PS2 games but also third-party titles streaming to the PS3 and possibly Vita. Will it be a subscription service or per title? All the juicy details will be revealed on Monday.

I think it's a great idea and i love the thought of OnLive. I just hope the networks etc are up to it. I have some great games on OnLive and although I do enjoy it, doesn't all work quite as well as it should yet with intermittent fidelity loss and minor control lag. It works but just not as slick as a media based machine. The possibilities if they get it right are are quite exciting. I actually agree with Mr De Lacy and think next gen games streamed to PS3 is an interesting idea if it worked properly.

I think it sounds great in theory and will be great in practice for many people. My own particular problem is that my big telly (the one the PS3 is connected to) suffers from a wee bit of input lag. Nothing like enough to ruin games, but it's there. Likewise, playing OnLive on my Mac also has a wee bit of input lag. Again, not enough to make games unplayable, but it's there. The difficulty would be that if you put the 2 together and stream games to that telly, the input lag would start to become a g-g-gamebreaker.

No discernible lag on the wee telly upstairs that has the 360 connected to it - don't suppose MS fancy trying a bit of streaming?

So, it didn't actually appear at E3 and all the rumour speculation pre-E3 was fun, but Yoshida has said they are looking at OnLive. Everything he says makes sense and it sounds like it'll definitely be offered at some point on PS4.

http://www.mcvpacific.com/news/read/int ... ing/097621

We’ve been looking at streaming tech,” Yoshida told MCV Pacific, mentioning that the PSP’s Remote Play system is one example of how Sony has explored the tech on a basic level.

“Cloud gaming services allow us to stream games via a server to different devices, but in order for it to become practical, the internet has to be very robust in terms of bandwidth and latency. As with all things infrastructure, it takes time for it to become widely available,” he said of more general streaming technology.

“Some consumers in the US and some parts of Europe have very robust and fast net speeds, so cloud gaming would be practical in those markets, but not when you look at the wider, broader global market.”

“Cloud gaming, because it’s so easy for consumers and is so convenient (ie you don’t have to do any big downloads, installation or setup). When there are faster internet connections, gaming in the cloud as a subscription service could become a reality. We’re looking at what OnLive is doing, and the tech around that, and considering how this can be a part of Playstation.”

Theres an good bit of speculation on PSM3s pre E3 podcast on this. The possibilities are very cool providing the lag and infrastructure issues are sorted out.

I'd love to see a Netflix streaming pricing model for the PS1/PS2 back catalog. One fee gets you access to an entire library of games, rather than having to pay per title. I'm not sure how that would work out for new 3rd party games, though you do see a lot of new independent films on Netflix streaming so there's a precedent for it.

I think the benefits of saving developers from needing to translate old games to a new platform (which would lead to many many more games) would outweigh the annoyance of a slight lag.

Does anyone know what happens on OnLive if your internet connection cuts out while playing? Does it simply pause the game? The router I received from AT&T is crap, and cuts out from time to time. That would be the only thing that would make me think twice about any technology that requires a constant internet connection for single player games.

Just as they had a '10 Year Plan' for the PS3, knowing they've acquired Gaikai is exciting, seeing the company shaping PlayStation's next ten years and beyond, essentially future proofing the PS4. Imagine what this could bring to the Sony ecosystem in the longterm. The potential is enormous. 8-)
