Retro goodness

You have a gun. Bad people and/or monsters are attacking. You know what to do.

Retro goodness

SL, hearing you this week singing VVVVV's praises, I highly recommend you try the PixelJunk SideScroller demo that's just hit. Beautiful vector graphics, tight controls, a curved CRT screen and you can even play the game's Credits Space Invaders-style. It's absolutely a love letter to those early 80s games of our youth. Crank the difficulty up to Brutal and have a blast. Plus, you'll appreciate this, the file size is tiny, just 52 MB.

DON'T TEMPT ME, FRODO!

Actually, I might add some funds to my PSN account come pay-day, as Pixeljunk Shooter has been tempting me quite deplorably. I like the retro aesthetic, and it looks like a first-rate homage to a happier, simpler and more brutal time. The Dark Souls of retro shmups?

Do you have it? I assume it has some measure of co-op?

It's very beautiful and enjoyably challenging. I completed the demo on Brutal but it certainly took a good few attempts! There's no online co-op, just offline co-op. Online leaderboards though, obviously. I don't have it yet simply because there's just too many games to get to since Christmas. I'm currently trying to finish Yakuza 3 (currently 118 hours in and the Platinum doesn't look likely, damn you ultra hard baseball batting cage!) so I can dive into Yakuza 4. Back to SideScroller, I do know jaymeister has it. He saw me playing the demo and sent a message with a succinct "You need to get the full version - it's a masterclass in retro". It shall be mine, just not yet.

Also, Dude, shmup is not the preferred nomenclature. Shoot 'em-up, please.

That's a brave move! Maybe intentional. After all, back in my Speccy / Amiga days, co-op was me and my friends crammed around the computer and the 14" TV.

I wish I had some friends to play the local co-op with.
