I am struggling with the whole spell/mage thing, I like to run about in BIG FUCKING ARMOUR not a dressing gown.

Think getting in to the college is solely based on getting the right spell scroll and then demonstrating it to the bird outside. I am working through those bits now. It is less rewarding that going to the bard school though, not kidding!

I have gone completely down the mage route now although like you it took me a while to cast aside my armour and embrace the robes. Now after about 120 hours I'm level 100 on alteration so I can dual cast Ebonyflesh with the top level Mage Armour perk and it gets me an armour rating of 300. Only problem is, if I actually put on any apparel with an armour rating of its own, my Mage Armour goes down to 80. So now I end up just selling or throwing away any armour I find, no matter how impressive.

At the mo I'm using the headmasters robes from the mages guild along with dragon plate boots n gauntlets I'm waiting till they drop the next patch do I can work on my dual enchantment so I can ditch the robes and get some benefit out of some dragon plate armour with magica regen plus reduced spell casting.
On another note my conjugation doesn't seem to have gone up for ages. I'm still on flaming atronach.
Currently playing:

i'm on level 14 and every opportunity i have had to level up i have opted to improve my magika... dont know if this will become a problem

i want to get some great armour or apparel to improve my magika, is the best way to do this by enchanting robes and such? if so i havent even got round to enchanting stuff yet... i have disenchanted a few things but haven't created anything yet. i believe i need to capture a soul to so, only problem is when i am using my bound conjured sword is it says soul gem is not big enough to capture soul of people i am killing :/

can i just buy bad ass robes that will make be hard as nails or will i have to create some myself?

also what is the difference between fortifying magika and the regeneration which is best to use?

I think you need Grand Soul Gems to capture souls of human enemies but you should be able to capture souls of Draug's, skeletons and animals and stuff.

I'm 150 hours in now, level 40 and apart from 2 very early health level ups, I have taken all mine as magicka improvements. It's not a problem. Just make sure you carry plenty of health and magicka potions, you can pretty much ignore stamina. Definitely resist the temptation to use armour, just level up your mage armour spells (oakflesh / ironflesh / ebonyflesh / dragonflesh) as soon as you can afford, and take the mage armour perks as soon as your level will allow.

Fortify magicka increases your max magicka temporarily, regeneration makes it regenerate faster. I find that in the earlier stages regeneration potions are useful but later on you will have various items of apparel that will regenerate your magicka super fast anyway so now I go for fortify over regeneration. You should also try to do the mages college questline as soon as possible, you will then be given robes that give +100% magicka regeneration and +50 magicka. Plus with a ring, amulet and circlet I'm up to +229% magicka regeneration at the minute. If I had specialised more in enchantment those figures would probably be even higher but I basically haven't bothered with enchantment.

Also, if you're going completely mage make sure you get a tank-style warrior companion. I have Mjoll the Lioness who you meet in Riften. And if you marry your companion, he/she will become immortal. Which is nice.

How do you marry companions? I have had Mjoll at my place often and tried entering dialogue to initiate the marriage line but to no avail. I want to marry that ho and start pumpin out baby elf nords(jk).

You have to speak to her while wearing the Amulet of Mara, you will then get an extra conversation option. You then need to go to the Temple of Mara in Riften for the ceremony and that's it. Once you marry her you get a further conversation option - "Would you mind cooking something for me?". You couldn't make this stuff up!

Thats gold. If only there was an option like 'Bitch, get in the kitchen and make me some pie'. Joking of course. I'm sure there is a mod for that though.
