Oooh, there's an in-game manual! Think it's selectable when you press the start button but don't quote me on that because I've not got the game on at the moment.

Fair enough. Mass Effect 3 is most certainly not an all action game, any more than ME2 or ME1 were. It's a hybrid between shooter and RPG. All of those conversations are part of the game in the same way that walking through towns and reading what everyone had to say (and, yes, being sent to do this or that) was part of the game in old school RPGs. Personally, I prefer watching a lifelike cut scene of someone talking to simply reading what they're saying. It allows the characters to have actual personalities and brings the player deeper into the story. And I really enjoy the pacing of Mass Effect games. You get through an intense 20-30 minute battle and then you have time to stretch back a bit and allow the story to develop before jumping into another battle. If this game was nothing but the battle scenes it would feel like Gears with a new paint job. I like Gears, but I vastly prefer Mass Effect.

I LOVE Mafia 2.
I would say that game is my current gen favourite.
that game has a good story, lots of cut scenes, but perhaps as it's based more in (possible) reality, I can really get into those characters and that story.

Mass Effect, for me, is too much movie (good though it may be) and not enough game.
I dislike COD and BF games too, so I'm certainly not a shooty fan as such.
I also got, and quickly traded in Skyrim as it seems RPG games in general don't float my boat.
I also don't enjoy Portal 2, found that very repetitive.
Left for Dead I really enjoy, also the Uncharted games.
perhaps my biggest issue is that I try too many games ! I

I did hear a good ME3 review today, where again they raved about how wonderful the experience was, something I just am not getting, but they did also say the mulitplayer was fun, so I'm going to give that a try tonight.

thanks to everyone who replied here !

Multiplayer was fun !
a lot like Horde in Gears, but on a space shippy thing.
I was with 3 nice/good players, got all the way through no problems.

Im about 13 hours in and Im totally enthralled. Last night I did an epic set piece followed immedietly by one of the most affecting experiences Ive had with a video game. Depending how far you are, the choices youve made and who survived ME2 you may or may not have experienced it but it was a real wow moment for me.

Im playing Vanguard this time rather than Soldier and im finding it really a fun style to play. Doing a Biotic Charge through cover, right across the map then punching the shite out of someone to finish them off is so satisfying. The melee combat makes you feel like a proper badass!

The levelling is a bit wierd as you start the same level as you were in ME2. I started at level 30 I think. You also therefore start with a shed load of points to allocate to shepherd and each of your squad. This means your powers can all be a good way along their levelling tree from the outset. Cool that you're powerful and all but I do feel they have stolen my opportunity to level up from scratch. Not the end of the world though. That will come later if I can't get better at this snapping to cover mechanic!

Cool but does that mean you max out really quickly? Levelling is my fave part or RPG games.
