Shooters

When discussing different shooter models this week, Stu wondered how well Killzone 3 Multiplayer has done. Well, it was the 5th best selling PSN game for March...

1. Journey
2. inFamous Festival of Blood
3. Resident Evil 4
4. MotorStorm RC
5. Killzone 3 Multiplayer

Impressive considering, as mentioned on the podcast, lots of people already own or have played/moved on from the game. I bought the Multiplayer because it's very nice to have the convenience of it on the machine to play any time. It's a model I'd very much like to see more of, and I think we will. It just makes sense.

This year is shaping up to be a brilliant one in Sonyland for shooters. Several bringing interesting innovations...

February, we had the insanely fun Twisted Metal.

March, Killzone 3 free-to-play capped MP with the option to buy.

April, House of the Dead 4. The first and only home version of the game.

May, Starhawk, successor to Warhawk, with its interesting Build n Battle system.

Also May, Resistance: Burning Skies on the Vita. The first ever portable FPS that uses dual stick controls.

Coming in the summer, initially as an open beta, the free-to-play Dust 514 with its massively ambitious plans.

And then finally the big one. Later this year, Call of Duty Vita with the possibility of cross-play functionality and PS3/Vita Dual Packs. Huge.

Right, now I'm off to shoot something! :)

It's funny, some refer to the 360 as the HaloBox or the ShooterBox, but it's actually the PS3 with the wealth of shooters. And they're (in my opinion) far more interesting than ones the 360 has to offer.

I own both a PS3 and an Xbox and while Sony have done a great job at bringing out PS3 exclusives i never feel like they are as good as the 3rd party games (shooters only mind you other PS3 exclusives in general are excellent),they are more imaginative and they bring something new but never the same level of polish and tightness needed to be great online experiences (the only games i play online are shooters really i much prefer single player in general PS3 has the edge there), i haven't played Killzone 3 but i hated what i did play of 2 it was so clunky and heavy there was none of the tight movement i would deem to be necessary for a shooter, Resistance 2 was pretty poor but once again i never played all of it so maybe it just takes time to get used to these things.

Correct me if i'm wrong but don't shooters generally sell better on Xbox? I mainly buy 3rd party games for my Xbox due to more of my friends having them tbh thats pretty much the only reason and they only bought the xbox because it was released first a mistake not to be made twice i think, the online experience is quite a bit more fluid on the Xbox as well if Sony can improve this for the next generation they would have me back as a more loyal customer especially if the used game Rumours for the next Xbox are true. I normally buy games new but its the principle of locking out single player components to punish people for buying them used i don't like (i don't mind when its multiplayer components due to high sever costs it makes sense to lock that out).

Any thoughts on online passes and used games being locked out?

I don't do much multiplayer which is why PS3 is for me but I do buy mostly used games so if one of the next gen machines locks them out, I will go for the other. I'm not so fussed about the online pass now but it will be crap if they start locking any single player content. Make sure you play Resistance 3 Duff, it is brilliant.
Currently Playing:

Ni No Kuni - PS3
Persona 4 - Vita
Zen Pinball 2 – Vita
Rayman Origins - Vita

Duff, in terms of (graphical) polish, Killzone and Uncharted, along with God of War (which ironically has just announced multiplayer) are generally considered the best looking games on consoles. In my opinion, Killzone has a brilliant multiplayer. I'd say try the free Killzone 3 MP, unlike KZ2 it has the COD feel you're used to. As for Uncharted, which can be described as a shooter, it's my favourite MP this generation. So much fun. Did you try the Twisted Metal demo? That's technically polished in that it, amongst all the high speed carnage and mayhem, very impressively always keeps a rock solid 60 fps online. Also, obviously, a ton of fun.

Yes, I agree with you. Hold fire on the next Xbox and wait for the PS4. For a good while now it seems MS have less and less interest in the gamer. Very few exclusives, a focus on the useless Kinect, more and more apps (that are free elsewhere) hidden behind a paywall, and now about to include 30 second adverts before some of those apps. Frankly, adding even more ads to a paid service is insulting. Just look at that cluttered, slow, cumbersome dash. Adverts in your face everywhere. In contrast, the XMB, clean, sleek, elegant, no wading through rubbish to get to, what should be the prime focus of these machines...the games. Remember Microsoft's E3 conference last year? It was awful. Embarrassingly so. This year will be no different.

In terms of the 'online experience' you're looking for on the PS4, you only have to look at the Vita to know they'll have cross game chat etc. Personally, I'm not interested in party chat and all that stuff, but just as the Vita has it, so will the PS4. And, I strongly suspect it'll remain free.

Resistance 3. You must play it! The best FPS I've played this generation. Really involving story, great graphics (sometimes incredible), atmosphere by the bucketload, fantastic pacing, wonderful level design, lots of really intense memorable set pieces, a rewarding weapon leveling system, unlocks, old school health pick ups, and the best collection of brilliant weapons in any shooter I've ever played. Completed it on Difficult, now I'm going through my run on Superhuman difficulty in mirror mode to get the Platinum. Yeah, listen to me and Chris...buy this game! :)

Sorry for the late reply been busy with Uni work (finished now until september YAY :D Gaming here i come)

Those are some pretty glowing reviews, you guys have convinced me as soon as i'm done with Max Payne and Ghost Recon i will give Resistance 3 a buy. (i might pick up god of war 3 as well it looks very impressive). I picked up Uncharted 2 so i will give it a proper run now before Max Payne.
I haven't tried Twisted metal mainly because i heard negative things about it but i will give the demo a shot.

Really like the look of the Vita but its price point is waaaayyyy too high for me at the moment (bought a 3DS on launch got burnt by that although the free games where sweet especially for a zelda fan getting a chance to play the earlier ones is cool) i have heard its a slick piece of kit and the online is better so if it translated to the PS4 i will be happy.

On next gen platforms Sony seem to be the only ones catering to core gamers as long as they get the basics in place for next gen e.g. simpler party system i will be a purchaser of the PS4 (Nintendo is well nintendo, and Microsoft seem to forget that the Xbox is a games console atm - Adverts are a particular sore point atm considering i'm paying £40ish a year for my gold account i don't expect the UI to be littered with Ads)

Duff, get God of War 3. It's spectacular, a visual and audio treat.

You've chosen a great time to pick up Uncharted 2. All the dlc is about to become free!

The Vita is a fantastic piece of kit. Check out the Soul Sacrifice game footage if you haven't seen it yet.

Yep. Sony's for the core gamer, while the 360 has become less and less about games over the past few years. Sony have announced they're showing over 20 games at E3. What are Microsoft doing? Well, on Bonus Round, Michael Pachter said he's met with Microsoft pre-E3 and “They told me don’t expect a lot of game stuff. Expect a lot of dashboard, interface, multimedia.” Great!
